Ringworm, Jock Itch, Athlete’s Foot – What’s the Difference?
Fungal infections of the skin are usually a result of
practicing poor hygiene. They can affect any part of the body causing mild to
severe itching and redness. Ringworm, athlete’s foot and jock itch are typical
skin fungal infections wherein each infection is given a different name
depending upon the location of the body it affects.
Ringworm is a common infection that can affect people of all
ages. The disease is caused by a fungus that thrives in moist, warm weather
environment, and contains elements such as yeast and mold. It is a highly
contagious skin fungal infection accompanied by a number of red, circular,
ring-like rashes on areas like neck, arms, legs and chest.
Athlete’s foot and jock itch are different forms of ringworm
that are differentiated based on the areas they affect. While jock itch affects
a person in areas such as the groin, buttocks and upper thighs, athlete’s foot
is a common infection found in the foot and areas between the toes.
Generally ringworm causes mild itching or pain, and is
followed by red lesions having raised borders. Being contagious, it can be
transmitted by direct contact with an infected person, animals like cats and
dogs, and even soil. The infection may have a clear center, but the sores can
have crusty or fluid-filled areas that can cause discomfort.
Flaky, cracking skin with a burning sensation and skin
redness in the groin, thighs or buttock areas are typical signs of jock itch
fungal infection. The red rash usually has raised patches with sharp-looking
borders wherein tiny bumps might appear along the border. Few common causes of
jock itch infection include – weakened immune system, excessive sweating,
obesity, and wearing tight underwear regularly.
On the other hand, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that
causes burning and itching between the toes. You don’t have to be an athlete to
contract this infection. The fungus which causes athlete’s foot grows in warm,
damp weather environment. Itching, redness, peeling and cracked skin are common
symptoms of this infection. In severe cases, it can cause blisters and
bleeding. Any unpleasant odor in your feet or a rash that becomes raw on
scratching can be signs of athlete’s foot infection. The condition can be
discomforting, but is treatable.
A hygienic lifestyle, regular bathing, wearing slippers when
going to public bathrooms, and keeping yourself clean and dry can be highly
helpful in keeping skin fungal infections at bay.
If you still get affected by any fungal infection, applying
the best antifungal creams, antifungal lotions, jock itch cream, or skin fungus
treatment cream can be highly effective in helping you get rid of the
infection. These over the counter creams are also a remedy for itchy skin. In
severe cases, don’t forget to visit a dermatologist.
