How to Read a Tyre?

Tyres are the most crucial part of any vehicle as they are largely responsible for offering a smooth and safe driving experience to the riders. They provide an air cushion that ensures road safety to the drivers, passengers, and other vehicle components. Since tyres are one of the most overlooked parts in a vehicle, many people don’t notice sculpted tyre descriptions and fail to maintain them properly.
The tyres manufactured by the best tyre brands have molded description on the sidewalls known as alphanumeric tyre code. This description provides consumers with the vital information about a tyre’s dimensions, limitations, load limits, etc. Since every automobile requires tyres of varied sizes and load capacities, it is important to accurately understand these readings.
Here is what the alphanumeric codes on tyres mean:
1.     Manufacturer’s Name
Every automobile tyre is embossed with the manufacturer’s or brand’s name. This is generally the largest marking on the tyre and is often highlighted with colors. It also ensures the authenticity and originality of the product.
2.     Tyre Size
Numeric figures on the tyre sidewalls indicate the size description of the tyre. These include:
·       Tyre width: shoulder to shoulder measurement, denoted in millimeters (mm)
·       Aspect ratio: ratio of tyre’s height to its width, expressed in percentage
·       Wheel diameter: internal diameter (height) of the tyre, denoted in inches
Since different automobiles need tyres of different sizes, it is important to understand your vehicle’s requirements and get the best quality tyres of appropriate sizes.
3.     Load Index
Load index indicates the carrying capacity of the tyres. Usually a two or a three digit number, this provides information about the maximum load carrying capacity (in kilograms) of the tyres. For example, large vehicles like commercial trucks and buses carry huge loads. Thus, they require higher load rated tyres.
4.     Speed Rating
Speed rating provides information about the maximum speed a tyre can handle when it is correctly inflated and loaded. It is denoted by the letter (Q, S, T, V, etc.) at the end of the sidewall after the load index number. While buying a new tyre, it is important to look at the speed rating and load index together.
According to the top tyre manufacturers, tyres have a direct impact on a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, riding, and handling experience. If a vehicle is fitted with inappropriate tyres, it will hamper the vehicle’s performance. This increases the importance of reading vehicle tyres carefully.
