How Tyres can affect your Vehicle’s Performance?


Tyres play a significant role in determining your vehicle’s overall performance. Since they are the only link between your vehicle and the road, they are responsible for ensuring a safe driving experience. While providing grip for braking and acceleration, tyres act as shock absorbing units that can withstand road vibrations. They support the overall weight of the vehicle and help drivers to have complete control over their vehicle.
As tyres are one of the most overlooked parts of a vehicle, it is important to understand the influence of their characteristics on the respective. They not only help drivers in choosing the right vehicle but also ascertain a smooth driving experience.   
Some tyre characteristics that influence vehicle performance include:
Wheel Diameter
Wheel diameter is referred to as the internal diameter (height) of the tyre that is embossed in inches (14-22) on the tyre sidewall. According to tyre experts, wheel diameter alone makes a huge difference in determining a vehicle’s performance. It is believed that large wheel diameter is directly proportional to the stability of the vehicle at high speeds. Since large wheels can accommodate large brake rotors, they work to provide efficient braking power.   
Tread Depth
Tread depth is referred to as the vertical measurement from the top of the tyre’s rubber to the bottom of tyre’s deepest grove. It is an essential feature that determines the road grip of the vehicle while playing a major role in traction and braking. According to the top tyre manufacturers in India, thicker treads provide better grip on the road, irrespective of weather and ground conditions. While they can cut through snow, mud, water, etc. they also ensure better traction with minimal risk of hydroplaning and out of control spinning.        
Tyre Pressure
Tyre pressure is defined as the pressure of air (denoted in PSI) in the tyres. It is believed to have direct influence on a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and control. Some risks associated with inadequate tyre pressure include:
·       Under inflated tyres: Premature failure is the biggest risk associated with under inflated tyres. It forces the tyre to flex more which heats up the tyre rubber. It may also result in faster breakdown of materials.
·       Over inflated tyre: Over inflation reduces the flexibility of tyres which may create problems when the vehicle encounters obstacles. It also leads to faster tyre wear.
Inadequate tyre pressure has a major impact on a vehicle’s handling and control. Thus, it is important to choose only the best quality tyres while providing proper attention to their respective air pressures.     
Apart from the above factors, elements like tyre width and rigidity also affect a vehicle’s performance. While tyre widths have direct impacts on suspension and handling, rigidity (soft or hard) of the rubber is related to a vehicle’s traction and braking efficiency.
